Notes on Grammar

Comparisons

Portuguese makes most comparisons with mais (more) or menos (less) placed before the adjective, followed by do que (or simply que) meaning “than.”

Use of Verbs: estar com

The construction estar com + noun expresses many states that English handles with “to be” + adjective:

The verb ter overlaps with estar com in expressing states, and is also used for age:
