Grammar Focus — Past Subjunctive

Unit 41 introduces the past subjunctive (also called the imperfect subjunctive), which is used when the trigger verb or expression is in the past tense. You will also learn useful expressions of agreement, disagreement, and the versatile verb ficar.

Forming the Past Subjunctive

The past subjunctive is formed from the third-person plural preterite stem. Drop the final -ram and add the past subjunctive endings.

For -ar verbs, the characteristic vowel is -a- → -asse:

nós	comprássemos
eles/vocês	comprassem

For -er verbs, the characteristic vowel is -e- → -esse:

For -ir verbs, the characteristic vowel is -i- → -isse:

Irregular Past Subjunctive Forms

Since the past subjunctive is based on the preterite stem, verbs that are irregular in the preterite will carry those irregularities into the past subjunctive:

When to Use the Past Subjunctive

All of the items that trigger the present subjunctive will, when put into past time, trigger the past subjunctive. Compare:

Eu espero que você fique.	Eu esperava que você ficasse.
Eu recomendo que ele estude.	Eu recomendei que ele estudasse.
Eu não deixo que ele fume.	Eu não deixei que ele fumasse.
Ele sugere que nós esperemos.	Ele sugeriu que nós esperássemos.

Grammatical Observations

Que Meaning “for” / “because”

The conjunction que is frequently heard as the equivalent of “because,” “since,” or “for”:

Repita, que eles não entenderam.	Repeat, because they didn’t understand.
Vamos, que a gente vai gostar.	Let’s go, for we’ll like it.
Chega, que eu não quero engordar.	That’s enough, because I don’t want to gain weight.
Fale francês, que português ele não entende.	Speak French, since he doesn’t understand Portuguese.
Ande logo, que está ficando tarde.	Hurry up, because it’s getting late.

Pode deixar

The phrase Pode deixar means roughly “Don’t worry about it,” “Put your mind at ease”:

Use of Verbs: ficar

The verb ficar is extremely versatile. It can translate as “be,” “become,” “get,” “stay,” “look,” and more.
