Phrases You Might Hear from a Waiter

Notes on Grammar

Dever for Probability

Forms of dever are commonly used to indicate probability — equivalent to English “must” in the sense of “probably.”

Ela deve falar francês.	She probably speaks French.
Ele deve ir em abril.	He’s probably going in April.
Deve ser o Marcos.	It must be Marcos.
Deve ser um bom filme.	It must be a good movie.
Devem ser nove horas.	It must be nine o’clock.
Ele deve estar doente.	He must be sick.
Eles devem ser ricos.	They must be rich.
Eles devem ter muito dinheiro.	They must have a lot of money.

To express probability in the past, use deve ter + the -do form:

Ele já deve ter ido.	He has probably gone already.
Deve ter sido o Paulo.	It must have been Paulo.
Deve ter chovido esta noite.	It must have rained last night.

Poder for Possibility

Just as dever indicates probability, poder indicates possibility — equivalent to English “may” or “could”:

Pode chover amanhã.	It may rain tomorrow.
O senhor pode ter razão.	You may be right.

More on Reflexives

Many common Portuguese verbs are reflexive. The reflexive pronouns are: me (myself), se (yourself/himself/herself), nos (ourselves), se (yourselves/themselves).

In commands, the reflexive element follows the affirmative verb but precedes the negative verb:

Sente-se.	Sit down.
Vista-se.	Get dressed.
Divirta-se.	Enjoy yourself.
Não se esqueça.	Don’t forget.
Não se corte.	Don’t cut yourself.
Não se preocupe.	Don’t worry.

With infinitives and -ndo forms, most speakers place the reflexive before:

Eu vou me casar.	I’m going to get married.
Ela está se vestindo.	She’s getting dressed.
Ele está se preparando.	He’s preparing himself.

Impersonal se is used with the he-form to express “one,” “we,” “you,” or “they” in general:

Aqui não se fala nisso.	Here one doesn’t speak about that.
Come-se bem lá mas paga-se bem também.	One eats well there but pays well too.
Aqui não se fica sem fazer nada.	Here one doesn’t just sit around.

Nós pretendemos fazer uma viagem à Europa.	We plan to take a trip to Europe.
Vamos fazer as pazes?	Shall we make up?
Ela adora fazer compras.	She loves to go shopping.
Eu quero fazer uma pergunta.	I want to ask a question.
Está fazendo muito vento lá fora.	It’s very windy outside.
Ontem fez frio, mas amanhã vai fazer calor.	Yesterday was cold, but tomorrow will be warm.

Vamos dar um passeio.	Let’s take a walk.

O dinheiro dá? — Dá, sim.	Is there enough money? — Yes, there is.
Não dá para entender.	It’s impossible to understand.
Esta vez deu tudo certo.	This time everything turned out alright.
