Grammar Focus — Indirect Object Pronouns

Unit 31 programs the indirect object pronouns me, lhe, nos, and lhes, and also shows how para with a stressed pronoun can serve the same purpose.

Part I — Me and Lhe

The Pronoun Me — “Me” / “To Me” / “For Me”

The pronoun me is placed before the verb and translates as “me,” “to me,” or “for me” depending on the verb.

Ele me escreveu.	He wrote (to) me.
Ele me escreveu uma carta.	He wrote me a letter.
Ele me mandou um livro.	He sent me a book.
Ele me vendeu o carro.	He sold me the car.
Ele me disse a verdade.	He told me the truth.

Negation: Insert não before me:

Ele não me escreveu.	He didn’t write to me.
Ele não me mandou uma carta.	He didn’t send me a letter.
Ele não me disse isso.	He didn’t tell me that.

With plural subjects (eles):

Eles me mandaram uma carta.	They sent me a letter.
Eles me disseram tudo.	They told me everything.
Eles não me venderam o carro.	They didn’t sell me the car.
Eles não me disseram nada.	They didn’t tell me anything.

With “for me”:

Ele me deixou o livro.	He left the book for me.
Ele me deixou duzentos cruzeiros.	He left me 200 cruzeiros.

With perguntar (to ask) and pagar (to pay):

Luís me pagou.	Luís paid me.
Luís me pagou dez dólares.	Luís paid me ten dollars.
Eles não me pagaram nada.	They didn’t pay me anything.

The Pronoun Lhe — “Him” / “Her” / “You” (indirect object)

The pronoun lhe works the same way as me, but means “(to) him,” “(to) her,” or “(to) you.”

Eu lhe escrevi.	I wrote (to) him/her/you.
Eu lhe mandei um livro.	I sent him/her/you a book.
Eu lhe disse a verdade.	I told him/her/you the truth.
Eu lhe vendi o carro.	I sold him/her/you the car.
Eu lhe perguntei.	I asked him/her/you.
Nós lhe pagamos.	We paid him/her/you.

Negation:

Part II — Nos and Lhes

The Pronoun Nos — “Us” / “To Us”

Marcos nos vendeu o carro.	Marcos sold us the car.
Eles nos mandaram as passagens.	They sent us the tickets.
Elas nos escreveram uma carta.	They wrote us a letter.
Você nos perguntou isso muitas vezes.	You asked us that many times.

The Pronoun Lhes — “Them” / “To Them”

Eu lhes trouxe isso.	I brought that to them.
Eu lhes trouxe isso ontem de São Paulo.	I brought them that yesterday from São Paulo.
Nós lhes pagamos cem cruzeiros.	We paid them 100 cruzeiros.
Lúcia lhes ensinou inglês.	Lúcia taught them English.
Nós já lhes perguntamos isso.	We already asked them that.
Ângela lhes deu um bom presente de Natal.	Ângela gave them a nice Christmas present.

Practice — All Four Pronouns Together

Eu lhes pago o almoço, mas não lhes pago o jantar.	I’ll pay them for lunch but not dinner.
Eu lhe ensino português. Ele me ensina inglês.	I teach him Portuguese. He teaches me English.
João me escreve sempre. Eu nunca lhe escrevo.	João always writes me. I never write him.
Nós lhes telefonamos sempre. Eles nos telefonam uma vez por mês.	We always call them. They call us once a month.
O professor nos ensina a falar português.	The teacher teaches us to speak Portuguese.
Meus amigos me deram um presente. Mas eu também lhes dei um presente.	My friends gave me a gift. But I also gave them a gift.

Part III — Pronouns after Para

You will often hear phrases with para used in place of the pronoun constructions with me, lhe, nos, and lhes. Para is especially used for emphasis, clarity, or contrast.

Eu telefonei para ele.	I called him.
Ele telefonou para mim.	He called me.
Eu trouxe uma coisa para o senhor.	I brought you something.
Ela não trouxe nada para nós.	She didn’t bring us anything.
Nós já compramos um bom presente para eles.	We already bought them a nice present.

For emphasis and contrast:

Eles mandaram o livro para mim, não para você.	They sent the book to me, not to you.
Para mim ninguém disse nada.	Nobody told me anything.
Para ela ninguém telefonou.	Nobody called her.

Common uses with dizer, perguntar, and command forms:

Os dois amigos vão a uma agência de turismo para marcar passagem e reservar hotel. Eles pretendem partir na próxima semana.

Na agência ficam sabendo que a Varig tem vôos diários de São Paulo para a Bahia.

— Lugar num hotel bom e barato nesta época do ano vai ser um pouco difícil — diz o funcionário da agência.

Mas depois de algum tempo e uns telefonemas tudo fica resolvido.

Com as passagens marcadas para o dia 15 e a reserva do hotel confirmada, os dois amigos voltam para casa, já fazendo planos para a viagem.
