Unit 26 opens Volume 2 with practical exchanges for clearing immigration and customs upon arrival in Brazil. You will practice three scenarios: at the Polícia Marítima (immigration), at the Alfândega (customs), and leaving the airport.

Notes on Grammar

Será que — Expressing Wonder and Polite Inquiry

Será is a form of the future tense. The query Será que…? is a very useful way to express ‘I wonder if…’, ‘Could it be that…?’, and similar thoughts.

Ter de — An Alternate for ter que

You will often find de rather than que between forms of ter and a following infinitive. Both mean the same thing.

The descriptive past establishes background; the simple past tells what happened against that background.
