How Serbo-Croatian Verb Conjugation Works

Serbo-Croatian is a South Slavic language spoken across Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. While standard varieties differ in vocabulary and some forms, the verb system is largely shared.

Verbs are organized into three conjugation groups based on present tense endings:

  • Group I (a-conjugation)-am, -aš pattern (čitati → čitam, čitaš)
  • Group II (e-conjugation)-em, -eš pattern (pisati → pišem, pišeš)
  • Group III (i-conjugation)-im, -iš pattern (govoriti → govorim, govoriš)

The aspect system pairs imperfective (ongoing) with perfective (completed) verbs. The past tense (perfekat) uses the l-participle + auxiliary biti, with gender agreement in the singular. The future tense is formed with the clitic forms of htjeti (ću, ćeš, će...) + infinitive.
