How Russian Verb Conjugation Works
Russian verbs belong to one of two conjugation classes (first and second), which determine their present-tense endings. However, the most distinctive feature of the Russian verb system is aspect: nearly every verb exists as an imperfective/perfective pair.
- Imperfective (НСВ) — describes ongoing, habitual, or repeated actions
- Perfective (СВ) — describes completed, one-time actions with a result
The past tense in Russian does not conjugate by person but instead agrees in gender (masculine, feminine, neuter) and number (singular, plural). The future tense of imperfective verbs is formed with буду + infinitive, while perfective verbs use their own conjugated forms for the future. Russian has no articles and often omits the verb "to be" in the present tense.
