Basic Sentences — Autofahren in Deutschland

This unit covers practical aspects of driving in Germany: traffic signals and signs, hand signals, driver’s licenses, driving schools, and a stop at a gas station. The grammar sections deal with conditional clauses and indirect discourse in more detail.

I. Traffic Signals and Signs

I was told that the cars in Germany had semaphores.	Man sagte mir, dass die Wagen in Deutschland Winker hätten.
That’s right. But you also see cars with directional lights everywhere.	Das stimmt. Aber Wagen mit Blinkern sieht man auch überall.
So if I took my car along, I wouldn’t have to have semaphores put on?	Wenn ich also meinen Wagen mitnähme, müsste ich keine Winker anbringen lassen?
By no means.	Keineswegs.
And how is it with hand signals?	Und wie ist es mit den Handzeichen?
I’d only give them if the turn signals didn’t work.	Ich gäbe sie nur, wenn die Richtungsanzeiger nicht funktionierten.
And naturally all those people should give hand signals who drive without turn signals, like motorcyclists, bicyclists, and people in the country who drive tractors etc.	Und natürlich sollten auch diejenigen Handzeichen geben, die ohne Richtungsanzeiger fahren, wie Motorradfahrer, Radfahrer und Leute auf dem Land, die mit Traktoren fahren usw.

Not in Germany. In order to get a driver’s licence there, she would have to go to driving school where she would also get theoretical instruction.	In Deutschland nicht. Um dort einen Führerschein zu erwerben, müsste sie eine Fahrschule besuchen, wo sie auch theoretischen Unterricht bekäme.
Well, the traffic signs she could learn as well as I without a driving instructor and for the traffic rules there would probably be a brochure or something similar.	Na, die Verkehrszeichen könnte sie so gut wie ich ohne Fahrlehrer lernen und für die Verkehrsregeln dürfte es ja wohl eine Broschüre o.ä. geben.
That’s true. But in driving school one would also explain the workings in the motor to her, the function of the spark plugs, of the carburetor, the generator and more of the same.	Das schon. In der Fahrschule würde man ihr aber auch die Arbeitsvorgänge im Motor erklären, die Funktion der Zündkerzen, des Vergasers, der Lichtmaschine u.ä.m.
What would that be needed for, insofar as you didn’t want to repair your car yourself?	Wozu wäre das nötig, sofern man sein Auto nicht selbst reparieren wollte?
In the German driving test such knowledge is assumed.	In der deutschen Fahrprüfung werden solche Kenntnisse vorausgesetzt.

III. At the Gas Station

Notes on Grammar

A. Conditional Clauses

In the current unit we encounter a new use of the subjunctive in conditional clauses. The subjunctive forms used in this unit’s basic sentences are not contrary to fact or even improbable — they are used by speakers as a style of polite or cautious expression, presenting hypothetical situations as a basis for discussion:

Ich gäbe sie nur, wenn die Richtungsanzeiger nicht funktionierten.	I’d only give them if the turn signals didn’t work.

These subjunctive forms are built from the past tense stem with umlaut where possible: nehmen → nähme, geben → gäbe, lassen → ließe, bekommen → bekäme.

B. Indirect Discourse

Indirect discourse was introduced in Unit 21. This unit provides further practice with the subjunctive in reporting what others have said. Two key patterns:
