Basic Sentences — Beim Arzt

This unit deals with the medical world in Germany — finding a doctor, visiting the office, and consulting with a specialist. The grammar covers the unreal (subjunctive) forms hätte, könnte, wäre, and würde, along with the prepositions ausser, statt, trotz, and wegen, verbs with prepositions, the conjunction denn, and the indefinite relative pronoun was.

I. Finding a Doctor

II. On the Telephone

Notes on Grammar

A. The Unreal (Subjunctive) — hätte, könnte, wäre, würde

The forms hätte, könnte, wäre, and würde are the unreal (subjunctive) forms of the irregular verbs haben, können, sein, and werden. They express three types of situations:

Polite requests and suggestions: Hätten Sie einen Augenblick Zeit für mich? — “Could you spare me a moment?”
Wishes that may not be fulfilled: Ich wünschte, sie würde sich von einem Facharzt untersuchen lassen. — “I wish she’d have herself examined by a specialist.”
Conditional sentences where a possible action depends on another condition: Es wäre gut, wenn er eine Tetanusspritze bekommen würde. — “It would be a good thing if he were to get a tetanus shot.”

The complete forms are:

Forms of würde may occur with any infinitive to form an unreal verb phrase. The phrases würde … haben, würde … können, and würde … sein thus occur alongside the special forms hätte, könnte, and wäre:

Würden Sie morgen Zeit für mich haben?	Hätten Sie morgen Zeit für mich?

In conditional sentences, the wenn-clause (condition) may be implied rather than expressed: Ja, das wäre nett. (= Es wäre nett, wenn Sie für mich auch eine Karte besorgen würden.)

B. Prepositions — ausser, statt, trotz, wegen

The preposition ausser takes the dative:

Ausser den Tabletten nehmen Sie täglich dreimal je fünfzehn Tropfen.	In addition to the tablets take fifteen drops three times a day.

The prepositions statt, trotz, and wegen take the genitive:

Ich schlage vor, dass Sie statt des starken Kaffees lieber etwas anderes trinken!	I suggest you drink something else instead of that strong coffee!
Ich habe immer noch Herzbeschwerden, trotz der Kur und der Medikamente.	I’m still having trouble with my heart, in spite of the treatment and the medicine.
Wegen meines Herzens.	On account of my heart.

Note that wegen may also follow its genitive object: Ich bin meines Herzens wegen hier. Together with während, these are the most common prepositions with the genitive in German.

When the object of the preposition is a pronoun referring to something inanimate, the special combining forms da- or dar- are used: Ich denke daran. — “I’ll bear that in mind.”

Verb-preposition complexes also occur with dependent clauses or infinitive phrases, using da- or dar- to anticipate the clause: Er denkt daran, im Herbst nach Deutschland zu fahren. — “He’s thinking of going to Germany in the fall.”

D. The Conjunction denn

Denn (“for”) is a co-ordinating conjunction followed by normal word order. Together with aber, oder, sondern, and und, it completes the group of common co-ordinating conjunctions:

Ja, das werde ich bald tun, denn bei unserer grossen Familie ist alle Augenblicke einer krank. — “Yes, I’ll do that soon, for with a family as large as ours there’s somebody sick all the time.”

E. The Indefinite Relative Pronoun was

The pronoun was introduces relative clauses referring back to the indefinite words alles, das, etwas, and nichts:

Nichts, was er sagte, war richtig.	Nothing he said was right.
Das ist etwas, was ich wirklich sehr empfehlen kann.	That is something I can recommend very highly.

Like the question-word was, it has the special combining form wo- or wor- after prepositions: Das ist etwas, worüber man sich freuen kann. — “That’s something you can be happy about.”

Translation Drill
