Course Material
Unit 10 is a narration and review unit covering verb modification. Instead of a basic dialogue, it presents a connected narrative describing classroom activities from Units 6–9 in third person. The narration reviews translation exercises, pronunciation correction, and question-and-answer drills. New vocabulary focuses on verb modifiers (trəw-tae, craən-tae, kat, chbah, taam) and noun modifiers (khlah, aetiet, thmey). Students practice converting dialogues into narrative form.

Grammar Notes
Negative Constructions: Verb Modification Review
Review the relationship between a Cambodian verb and its modifiers. While nouns and adjectives follow a simple head-modifier order, verbs can have modifiers that either precede or follow them:
Noun Predicate: pia? mun kee boŋ-oh kii khmae. — ‘The first word of all is Khmer.’
Adjective Predicate: sra? niŋ khoh tee. — ‘That vowel is wrong.’
Verb Predicate: koun seh bət siew-phiw. — ‘The students close their books.‘
Non-negatable Verb Modifiers
Some verb modifiers do not belong to the major word-classes. They come before or after the verb:
| Before the Verb | After the Verb | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| soum | ’please’ | haəy | ’already’ |
| kom | ’don’t’ | tee | (emphatic word) |
| cam | ’wait and’ | tee? | (question particle) |
| aoy | ’let, have’ | viñ | ’back, instead’ |
| niŋ | ’will’ |
