Grammar Notes

The Future Tense

Bengali forms the future by adding specific endings to the verb stem:

PersonEndingExample (kora — to do)
ami (I)-bokorbo
tumi (you, familiar)-bekorbe
apni (you, formal)-benkorben
she/tini (he/she)-be/-benkorbe/korben
amra (we)-bokorbo
tara (they)-bekorbe

Common future forms: jabo (will go), ashbo (will come), khabo (will eat), bolbo (will say), dekhbo (will see).

Expressing Intention

Use ichchha (wish/desire) or plan with the infinitive:

  • ami jawar ichchha achhe — I wish to go
  • amader bazar korar plan achhe — We have a plan to shop

Conditional: jodi … tobe

The conditional pattern in Bengali uses jodi (if) in the first clause and tobe (then) in the second:

  • jodi apni ashen, tobe ami khushi hobo — If you come, I will be happy
  • jodi brishti na hoy, tobe amra jabo — If it doesn’t rain, we will go

The verb after jodi takes the present tense, while the result clause uses the future.

Purpose Clauses with jonno and -te

To express purpose, use jonno (for) or the infinitive marker -te:

  • ami Bangla shikhte esechhi — I have come to learn Bengali
  • khabar khawar jonno restaurant-e jabo — I will go to a restaurant to eat food
