Grammar Notes

Present Continuous: korchhi, korchho, korchhen

The present continuous is formed by adding -chhi (1st person), -chho/-chhen (2nd person), or -chhe (3rd person) to the verb stem. The root verb is typically in its base form (e.g., kor- from kora, kha- from khaowa, ja- from jaowa).

  • Aami korchhi – I am doing
  • Tumi korchho – You are doing (informal)
  • Apni korchhen – You are doing (formal)
  • Se korchhe – He/She is doing
  • Aamra korchhi – We are doing
  • Tara korchhe – They are doing

Use of ekhon (now)

Ekhon marks the present moment and emphasizes that the action is ongoing at the time of speaking. It can appear at the beginning or end of the sentence.

  • Ekhon aami kaaj korchhi. – I am working now.
  • Aami ekhon bhat khaachhi. – I am eating rice now.
  • Apni ekhon kothay achhen? – Where are you now?

Progressive with thaka

Thaka (to stay, to be) can function as an auxiliary to emphasize duration or ongoing state. The structure is: main verb + thaka in continuous form.

  • Se kaaj kore thakchhe. – He/She has been working (continuously).
  • Aami shikhe thakchhi. – I have been learning.
  • Tara kothay thakchhe? – Where have they been staying?

Contrast: Habitual vs. Progressive

  • Habitual (simple present): Aami protidin bhat khaai. – I eat rice every day. (general habit)
  • Progressive (present continuous): Aami ekhon bhat khaachhi. – I am eating rice now. (action in progress)

The habitual describes repeated or general actions; the progressive describes what is happening at the moment.
