Grammar Notes

Time Agreement (kokhon, ki shomoy)

Kokhon means “when”; ki shomoy means “what time.” Apni kokhon ashben? (When will you come?). Ki shomoy dekha hobe? (What time will we meet?). Dupur du-ta (two in the afternoon), shokal nao-ta (nine in the morning). Use -e for time: dupur-e, shokal-e.

Future Plans (jabo, korbo, ashbo)

Jabo (I will go), ashbo (I will come), korbo (I will do). Ashben (you will come), jaben (you will go). Aami kal dupur-e ashbo (I will come tomorrow afternoon). Dekha hobe (we will meet)—hobe is future “will be/happen.”

Confirming and Cancelling (thik achhe, cancel)

Thik achhe means “it’s okay,” “that’s fine,” “agreed.” Dupur du-ta thik achhe? (Is two o’clock okay?). Cancel kora (to cancel): Aami cancel korte chai (I want to cancel). Cancel kore dilam (I cancelled). Thik achhe, aami jabo (Okay, I will go).

Expressing Possibility (hote pare, shombhob)

Hote pare means “can be,” “may happen”: Dekha hote pare (We can meet). Shombhob (possible): Eta shombhob (That is possible), Eta shombhob na (That is not possible). Paren (you can): Apni ashben, thik achhe? (You will come, okay?).

Aami Mr. Rahman-er sathe dekha korte chailam. Aami phone kore bollam, “Apni kokhon paren?” Tini bollen, “Kal dupur-e thik achhe. Ki shomoy?” Aami bollam, “Dupur du-ta thik achhe?” Tini bollen, “Haan, thik achhe. Aami ashbo.” Tarpor aamar kaj hoyechhe. Aami cancel korte bollam. Aami phone kore bollam, “Aamar dorkar hoyechhe. Dekha hote pare na. Aami aabar try korbo.” Tini bollen, “Thik achhe. Kokhon paren, bole deben.” Aami bhalo bhabe bujhlam.

I wanted to meet with Mr. Rahman. I called and said, “When can you?” He said, “Tomorrow afternoon is fine. What time?” I said, “Is two o’clock okay?” He said, “Yes, that’s fine. I will come.” Then I had work. I said I wanted to cancel. I called and said, “I have an urgent need. We cannot meet. I will try again.” He said, “That’s fine. When you can, let me know.” I understood well.
