Grammar Notes

Adjectives (boro, chhoto, lomba, bete)

Bengali adjectives typically follow the noun: boro manus (big person), chhoto bachcha (small child). When used predicatively (after the subject), no copula is needed in present tense: Aamar bhai lomba (My brother is tall). Bete means short in height; chhoto can mean small in size or younger in age. Lomba means tall or long.

Colors (lal, neel, shobuj, holud)

Common colors: lal (red), neel (blue), shobuj (green), holud (yellow), kaalo (black), shada (white), brown (brown). Colors follow the noun: neel jama (blue shirt), lal gari (red car). To ask color: Ki rong? or Kono rong? (What color?).

Physical Descriptions

Chul (hair), chehara (face), aankhi (eyes) are common body terms. Tar chul kaalo (His hair is black). Tar chehara sundor (Her face is beautiful). Lomba and bete describe height. Mota (fat) and patla (thin) describe body type. Use -r possessive: Aamar bhai-r chul (my brother’s hair).

Character and Personality Words

Bhalo manus (good person), sundor (beautiful), bhalo (good), kharap (bad), funny (funny), gomor (serious), misti (sweet, gentle). Khub intensifies: khub bhalo (very good), khub sundor (very beautiful). Aamar bondhu khub funny (My friend is very funny).
